The Maple Ridge Branch of the Hunyuantaiji Academy started as an ad hoc workshop in the Vancouver and Abbotsford area sponsored by Ngia Tran in the early 1990s. Ngia is a diciple of Master Chen Zhonghua. He moved from Edmonton to Abbotsford and started teaching in B.C. - 1997: Private disciple's retreat sponsored by Nghia Tran. Chris Lacoix, Susan Holland, Linda Mryglod, Brian Fergusion, Chen Zhonghua. Worked out in Abbotsford and visited Vancouver.
- 1998: Inservice for the Abbotsford School Board Teacher's Convention. Participants were high school teachers. The location was Rick Hansen High School.
- 1998: Master Peter Wu visited Abbotsford at the invitation of Master Chen Zhonghua. Nghia Tran was the host.
- 1999: Workshop in Burnaby. We used a warehouse bay owed by Nghia and one of his friends. Gary Kong, Steven Chan and Martha Grundy joined us at this workshop in addition to Nghia's students. Chen Style Taijiquan Practical Method.
- 2000: Workshop sponsored by Nghia Tran in Abbotsford. It was in the basement of a strip mall. Hunyuan 24 was taught at this time.
- 2001: Workshop sponsored by Nghia Tran.
- 2002: Members of this community participated in a trip to China with Master Chen Zhonghua: Jody Hall and Kay Terai. There are others who did not continue with taiji.
- 2003: Master Chen was invited by Mr. Lou Crockett to give workshops in this area. We started in Fort Langley. Lou Crockett, Bill Vanderhall, and previous attendees from Nghia's group started attending. Ian Macrae from Fall City, WA joined us.
- 2006-2007: Many of the original participants of this group became Master Chen Zhonghua's disciples.
- 2007: Moved the workshop location to Maple Ridge. This is where most of the participants are from.
